The Making Of The New Leather Head Masks
In the two and a half years of reviving The London Leatherman label, the LW19 & LW11 Leather Head Masks have by far been the most requested and sort after item by dedicated collectors and those that know their punk rock history. It’s also been the most laborious and detail specific item to get just right before putting into production and officially releasing. With a rationale to produce items that are sympathetic to Ken’s (The London Leatherman) craft and legacy it’s important to the label that features are updated making them relevant for the current day (2021), especially the functionality and quality of the materials, whilst remaining stylistically correct.
For the making of the new masks a few details were non-negotiable like the high grade of leather used and the cut, using an original pattern that works for one-size-fits all. We’ve kept the ratio between eye, nose and mouth holes as they were originally, down to the same stitching techniques and flattening of the inner seams for a flush finish.
The nappa leather masks are lined as they were in the 70s, sewn so that the exquisite nappa is smooth and soft on the skin and the lining cut so that the mask holds its shape in all the right places. The label is sewn into the inner lining.
The masks made from our superior quality cow hide are left raw inside, the leather seams are exposed but pressed down for a flat finish, the suede side of the leather sits directly on the skin, the label positioned on the outside at the back of the neck.
A functional collectors item with many customers displaying them as art, especially those with an interest in fetish and punk rock history. For this purpose we use and recommend this display head: Male Polystyrene Mannequin Heads - Black Flocked (morplan.com)
Each mask is individually cut and sewn by the one craftsman from start to finish in London, England. Both the LW19 & LW11 masks are in stock now.
